Franciscan priest celebrates Mass in the basement of King’s Chapel.
September 15, 1778
The first Catholic Mass celebrated in Boston, it is a secret funeral Mass for the Chevalier de Saint-Sauveur, a visiting French naval officer killed in a riot caused by his crew baking bread in front of a group of hungry Bostonians. A memorial to the officer’s memory is erected outside of King’s Chapel in 1917.
